N.B. This will only work on Jaunty, for Karmic instructions please click here.
Last July I posted a tutorial and a series of links to get Facebook Chat working in Pidgin. Since then I’ve changed my IM program to Empathy. Since Facebook still hasn’t bothered to get XMPP support for Facebook Chat yet I really wanted some way of getting it working in Empathy.
Thankfully, some wonderful people out there on the internet already have. The process is slightly different from that of the Pidgin tutorial but should be achievable for most of you.
The first thing to do is go and download this plugin (written for Pidgin, but don’t let that put you off) created by Eion Robb.
Next, you will need to follow these instructions which first appeared on Ubuntu Forums. Enter them into the terminal as follows.
wget https://bugs.freedesktop.org/attachment.cgi?id=20810
sudo mv attachment.cgi?id=20810 /usr/share/telepathy/managers/haze.manager
wget https://bugs.freedesktop.org/attachment.cgi?id=20811
sudo mv attachment.cgi?id=20811 /usr/share/mission-control/profiles/bigbrownchunx-facebookim-haze.profile
Now restart Empathy and you should be able to add your Facebook account.
Good Luck!

Unfortunately this doesn’t seem to work with empathy (2.27.5-0ubuntu1) in Karmic. Any clues?
Thanks for this. works!!!
So on Ubuntu Karmic I got this to work. You don’t need to download the pidgin plugin, it is already in the repository. Just download pidgin-facebookchat. Then do the other instructions detailed above.
This has stopped working for me in karmic. Has this happened to anyone else?
hi.. i tried your insctructions but i guess this error in the last command “mv: cannot move `attachment.cgi?id=20811′ to `/usr/share/mission-control/profiles/bigbrownchunx-facebookim-haze.profile’: No such file or directory”
im using jauny, with an additional repository so now im using the latest empathy.how do i correct this?
Shucks, using Jaunty, got the same problem as psychoky. However I manually created the /usr/share/mission-control/profiles/ directory, and I added the account to Empathy however it won’t connect. Under “Advanced” I see “Server” (default is blank) and “Facebook_hide_self” (default is “0″).
I also figured the same as Nephi513 and didn’t bother downloading it from the Google Code page as I already had it installed from the repos.
Any solution to this?

same problem as psychoky & titaniumtux…
The last command doesn’t work with karmic,
I am going to try titaniumtex’s tip by creating the folder.
any other tips would be great…
Could someone make a ppa repository from this?
